Environmental Health Indicators
An environmental health indicator is a measure of health, environmental quality, or sociodemographics used to help monitor the overall health of the population. The Environmental Health Investigations Branch compiled a report in 2001 which established criteria for such indicators and proposed 18 environmental health indicators for California in seven topic areas: (1) Sociodemographic; (2) Air Quality; (3) Pesticides; (4) Water Quality; (5) Waste/Topics; (6) Health; and (7) the California/Baja California Border Region. Basic statistical data are presented for each indicator, along with a definition, formula, significance, data characteristics, data limitations, and additional information. The National Environmental Health Tracking Program, in which California participates, also is recording environmental health indicators on a number of topics including asthma, air quality, water quality, carbon monoxide poisonings, and birth defects.
